A Brief History of Jagdalpur
The history of Jagdalpur dates back to Valmiki’s Ramayana. Lord Rama during his exile is believed to have passed through this region. Jagdalpur is considered to be the paradise of tourists for its numerous sightseeing joints. The city offers every person the places of his/her choice. It has a number of tourists sights from temples to wildlife’s to waterfalls to lakes to rivers to museums and many more.Chitrakoot waterfall: It is the broadest waterfall, considered to be the Niagara Falls of India because of its typical horse-shoed shape. Chitrakoot Falls are located at a distance of 38km from Jagdalpur only connected by road. This water body has height of 96 ft and the source of this waterfall is Indravati River.
Tirathgarh Falls: Also known as “Milky Fall” because of the white colour of water, which descends down the rocky slope therefore, giving an impression of milk falling down the slope. This waterfall is located in the middle of Kanger Valley National park. It is located 35km from Jagdalpur in the south-west direction.
Apart from these there are many other waterfalls including Chitradhara Waterfalls, Tamra Ghoomar Waterfalls, Mandawa Waterfalls, Kanger Dhara which add to the beauty of the region.
Kanger Valley National Park: One of the most famous wild life park in Chhattisgarh, it is home to Indian false vampire bat, wolf, leopard cat, mouse deer, mongoose, cheetal, sambhar, porcupine, sloth bear etc.
Indravati National Park: Spread over 1258 km2 Indravati National Park is a house of many reptiles birds and animals which include barking deers, gaurs, wild dogs, barasinghas, crocodiles, cobras, Indian Chameleons etc.
Kailash and Kutumar Caves: These two natural caves are the second longest natural caves in the world, located 40km from Jagdalpur. They are located in the dense forests of Kanger Valley National Park near Tiratgarh Waterfalls which are main tourist attractions in Chattisgarh. The striking feature about these caves are the stalagmite and stalactites formation. These caves have many blind wells and consist of five chambers.
Aranyak Cave: These caves are newly discovered by Dr. Suresh Tiwari in july 1996.
Danteshwari Temple: Dedicated to Maa Danteshwari, a local goddess, considered to be the incarnation of Shakti, it is located at a distance of 84 kms from Jagdalpur. It is a famous religious destination in the region and is revered by the inhabitants of the region.
Temples in Barsoor: These temples are located on the banks of Indrawati river. The entire area is famous with a wholesome of 147 temples and an equal number of ponds.
Mavli temple: The temple is famous as most of the rituals of Bastar Dussherra are accomplished in this temple.
Jagannath temple: This temple is dedicated to lord Jagannath, Subhadra and Balbhadra.
Dalpat Sagar Lake: Dalpat Sagar is the largest artificial lake in Chhatisgarh which is 400 years old. This ancient lake was built by famous king of Bastar Raja Dalpat Deo Kakatiya. Th
